Art Series Hotels announces new flagship hotel at Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane, March 2019

Art Series Hotels has officially announced its eighth property at Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane will be named after acclaimed Australian painter Vincent Fantauzzo. The first new Art Series property under the AccorHotels banner, The Fantauzzo is scheduled to open in March 2019 with bookings now available.

Born in Birmingham in 1977, Fantauzzo moved from England to Australia as a child. A graduate of RMIT University, he has exhibited worldwide with shows in India, Vietnam, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Australia.

Drawing on techniques from other mediums such as photography and film to create a narrative, Fantauzzo uses contrasting elements of light and dark, shadows and colours to create depth and heighten the realism and theatrical effect.

Renowned for his portraits of notable people including Heath Ledger, Matt Moran, Brandon Walters and Julia Gillard, he has won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the Archibald Packing Room Prize, and the Archibald People's Choice Award four times, including in 2012 for his portrait of now-wife, actress Asher Keddie.

Carved into the cliff under Story Bridge, the $100million luxury hotel will feature 166 guest rooms, with custom contemporary furnishings, featuring both original artworks and up to 500 reproductions of Fantauzzo’s most recognised works. A seamless combination of art, design and functionality, the hotel will be a powerful representation of contemporary creativity, with connected and inspiring spaces for guests to discover.

“To have an Art Series hotel dedicated to showcasing my work is truly an honour and I cannot wait for the doors to open in March,” Fantauzzo said. “I'm strongly passionate about accessibility to the arts, and what excites me most about the collaboration is that this hotel will give all guests the opportunity to connect with art, and immerse themselves in a really creative experience.”

Fantauzzo’s take on photorealism inspired architects SJB to create a counterpoint, a contrasting backdrop to his work through dark tones and glossy finishes that challenge the traditional ‘white gallery’ space. The scheme utilises polished concrete and contrasting tones against a highly reflective black glass.

Natural rock and timber take cues from the cliff face and external facade, acting as an earthy installation. The angular forms found on both the facade of the building and interior elements, provide further clarity and distinction between Fantauzzo’s artworks and the hotel’s design.

AccorHotels Chief Operating Officer Pacific, Simon McGrath, said: “Vincent is a charismatic artist with so much raw talent he was a natural fit to be the namesake artist of the first Art Series hotel under our management. His mission is to make art accessible so he is a perfect match for the brand and The Fantauzzo’s design will clearly reflect his individual sense of style and sophistication.”

The six-storey hotel will also offer four distinct food and beverage outlets as well as an impressive rooftop pool boasting spectacular views of the Brisbane River and CBD, bar, gym and three conference rooms, fully equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual technology.

Arts Series Hotels transformed the Australian market when it launched in 2009. Signature art experiences at The Fantauzzo will include the infamous art tours, in-room art channels and art libraries. Branded Smart Cars and Lekker bicycles will be available to explore all that Brisbane has to offer and further afield.

The Fantauzzo is scheduled to open in March 2019 with Art Series now taking bookings online at www.artserieshotels.com.au. Room rates start from $309 per room per night.

Art Series Hotels announces new flagship hotel at Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane, March 2019

Art Series Hotels officially announced today it will open its eighth property at Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane in March 2019. This will be the first new property for the Art Series brand since joining the AccorHotels family.

Destined to be the most luxurious Art Series property yet, the $60million hotel will be carved into the cliff under the Story Bridge and will feature 166 guest rooms, with custom contemporary furnishings and original artworks and giclee prints.

Inspired by and dedicated to Australia’s most contemporary artists, the six-storey hotel will also offer four distinct food and beverage outlets as well as an impressive rooftop pool boasting spectacular views of the Brisbane River and CBD, bar, gym and three conference rooms, fully equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual technology.

AccorHotels Chief Operating Officer Pacific, Simon McGrath, said the new Brisbane property – the first Art Series Hotel to open since they acquired Mantra Group in May this year – would set a clear direction for Australia’s only art inspired hotel group.

“Art Series Hotels is celebrated for offering guests a unique art-inspired hotel experience like no other,” he said.

“The stunning new flagship hotel at Howard Smith Wharves is a strong sign of AccorHotels’ belief in the much-loved brand and will kick start our plans for future growth across Australia and New Zealand.”

Located in the hottest art and cultural hubs, the second Art Series Hotel for the river city (The Johnson opened in September 2016) will enjoy all the amenities on offer at Brisbane’s newest entertainment and lifestyle destination.

Breathing new life into the historic riverside precinct, Howard Smith Wharves will soon be home to an expansive brewery, abundant green spaces and picnic areas, two unique indoor event spaces, overwater bar and a stellar line-up of waterfront restaurants from some of Australia’s leading restaurateurs.

Designed by the highly acclaimed multi-disciplinary practice SJB, the natural tones and textures of the hotel’s exterior will ensure it blends into the cliff face, its geometry referencing the fragmented cliff shapes and the highly engineered bridge. The lobby features a double-height wall of glass with a rugged outlook while the guest rooms enjoy spectacular city views across the Brisbane River or of cascading greenery and the sculptured rock face.

Arts Series Hotels transformed the Australian market when it launched in 2009. Privately owned by the Deague family until it was acquired by Mantra Group last year, original artworks and prints adorn the walls and halls of each hotel. In a beautiful case of serendipity, the new Brisbane hotel is being developed by the Deague Group under the conversant eye of CEO Will Deague.

“As one of Australia’s fastest-growing capital cities with a burgeoning art culture, Brisbane continues to remain a major focus for the Group,” Deague said.

“With an increasing demand for accommodation, we are excited to introduce a second dedicated art led offering as part of the city’s expansion and are confident this luxury boutique development at Howard Street Wharves will only entice even more visitors to Brisbane.”

The Art Series portfolio includes Melbourne hotels The Olsen, South Yarra; The Blackman, St Kilda Rd; The Cullen, Prahan; The Larwill, Parkville, The Chen, Box Hill; The Watson in Walkerville, South Australia and The Johnson in Spring Hill, Queensland.

Art Series will release further details, including the hotel’s namesake artist, next month.

Colour your stay

In an Australian first, Art Series Hotels will challenge its guests this spring to grab a spray can, mask up and leave their mark on the walls of three of its properties.

From October 15 to December 30, a white-washed room at The Blackman, The Johnson and The Olsen hotels will be transformed into a collective canvas as part of a participatory art project.

Famed for daring campaigns inspired by the latest trends in art and travel, Colour Your Stay will rely on guests to help create an ever-changing mural and become part of the shared experience.

The collaborative art project follows the award-winning No Robe campaign, which boldly asked Art Series guests to strip nude and strike a pose, and the mischievous Steal Banksy that encouraged art theft.

Colour your stay

A pioneer of the Australian street art and stencil movement, Luke Cornish (aka ELK) will lead the project for Art Series. In a nod to each of the hotels namesake artist, he will create a different artwork at each hotel; a portrait of John Olsen, Charles Blackman and Michael Johnson, that guests are called on to complete.

Upon check in hotel staff will share instructions and guests can register to participate. A mixture of spray cans and paint brushes, a gown, mask and gloves will be available for guests to use in the room, with each person given 2 minutes to unleash the artist within.

Transgressing the ‘look but don’t touch’ restriction of conventional gallery culture, the stark white interior will be transformed over time as hundreds of collaborators leave their mark.

Colour your stay

Cornish says of his involvement in the campaign, "I’m thrilled to be working with Art Series Hotels on Colour Your Stay. Their dedication to supporting urban art and all of its wonderful satellite genres is a passion I share and I’m really excited to see what we create together with guests."

With contemporary artists increasingly involving the public to help create their work – think Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s Obliteration Room or Measuring the Universe by Slovakian Roman Ondák – Colour Your Stay also relies on guests to participate.

Not that it should be too hard to convince them to join in however. Famed American photographer Spencer Tunick recently lured 1000 people for a large-scale nude installation at a supermarket in the middle of a Melbourne winter, which highlights the public’s desire to take part in unique interactive installations.

“Supporting the arts and delivering unique art inspired experiences for our guests that are personal and bold sits at the core of the Art Series Hotels brand,” Director of Marketing Ryan Tuckerman says.  “This exciting campaign celebrates the growing art movement that directly engages the audience in the creative process and explores all manners of self-expression.”

Colour your stay

Luke Cornish was the first ever stencil artist to be named a finalist in both the Archibald Portrait Prize and Sulman Prize. He uses up to 85 layers of carefully hand-cut acetate in each work.  He then sprays layer upon layer of aerosol paint until his images bear a striking photographic resemblance in a new form of hyper-realism.

Cornish uses the tools of a street artist to create decadent, detailed works that envelop the viewer. There is an honesty to his work, slicing back the layers and reconstructing his muses with astonishing deftness. His subjects have included Wil Anderson, Jack Charles, Father Bob Maguire, Catherine McGregor and former Prime Minister Bob Hawke.

Cornish will officially launch the campaign and unveil his artwork at The Olsen in South Yarra on October 15. His latest exhibition (In)appropriate opened at the Metro Gallery, Armadale on October 4.
Guests who share a photo on Instagram with the tag #colouryourstay will go in the draw to win a night on Art Series plus a signed ELK drawing.

NEW CONFERENCE OFFER HELPS DELEGATES STAY SAFE IN THE SURF

Mantra Hotels has taken delegate safety to new depths with the launch of its free* surf safety presentation offer, available at four of its most popular conferencing venues in Queensland.

Each 15 minute session is conducted by Surf Life Saving Queensland’s (SLSQ) community awareness team and includes vital information on basic water safety tips, the various types of flags, how to spot a rip current and what to do if you’re caught in one, sun safety tips, information on marine stingers and dangerous creatures, and a brief introduction to lifesaving equipment.

The offer, which is available at Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas and Mantra Mooloolaba Beach on the Sunshine Coast and Mantra Legends Hotel and Mantra on View Hotel on the Gold Coast, supports Mantra Hotels’ long-standing partnership with SLSQ.

Mantra Hotels and SLSQ have been working together to help reduce beach fatalities along the Queensland coastline since partnering in June 2017.

Mantra Group Executive Director of Sales, Marketing, Revenue & Distribution, Luke Moran, said the presentations focus on educating delegates about surf safety and support SLSQ’s vision for zero preventable deaths in Queensland public waters.

“With all four participating properties located along the Queensland coastline, we feel it’s also our responsibility to raise water safety awareness and to let our delegates know the only place to swim in the surf is between the flags,” said Mr Moran.

“The presentations aim to change behaviours and save lives through education and increased understanding of vital beach safety messages in a fun and relaxed environment.”

SLSQ Chief Executive Officer John Brennan OAM said their partnership with Mantra Hotels centers around various initiatives designed to promote a healthy active lifestyle and safety on and off Queensland beaches.

“It’s informative presentations like these which assist us in working towards our vision of zero preventable deaths in Queensland public waters,” said Mr Brennan.

The 15 minute surf safety presentation is free of charge for all conferences booked before 31 December, 2018 for travel before 31 December, 2019. To book, call 07 5665 4072 or email conference@mantragroup.com.au

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra welcomed former UK Royal Marines Mick Dawson and Steve Sparkes

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra welcomed former UK Royal Marines Mick Dawson and Steve Sparkes, the two-man crew of the Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour, on August 28 after they successfully completed the Great Pacific Race - a grueling, 2,400 mile race from Monterey in California to Hawaii.

Now safely on land following their treacherous 82-day expedition through rough seas from Hurricane Lane, both Mick and Steve have rejoined with their partners and are now recuperating with a stay at Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra.

Steve, who lost his vision following a diving incident in his twenties, becomes the first blind person to row across the Pacific Ocean, entering the Guinness World Records for this incredible feat.

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra General Manager, Craig Smith, said the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra team are thrilled to partner with the Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour rowers and to be Steve and Mike’s land of Aloha home away from home.

“We’re so proud to welcome the rowers to our hotel and we’re doing our utmost to facilitate their recovery after such a brave and obstacle-filled journey to our shores,” said Mr Smith.

Their arrival comes as the Hawaiian Tourism Authority confirmed the State of Hawaii is open for business post-Hurricane Lane. All airports, resorts and hotels, activities, restaurants, retail operations, beaches and publicly accessible roadways are open, as well as most forest lands and state and county parks.

The Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour is the final team to complete the 2018 race, with two other crews already reaching the finish line and two withdrawing. For further information on the Great Pacific Race, visit www.greatpacificrace.com

MANTRA GROUP PROPERTIES IN TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND PITCH TOGETHER TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

From Magnetic Island to Port Douglas, 12 Mantra Group properties in North Queensland will again pitch together to raise funds for official charity partner ‘Ending Violence Against Women Queensland’ (EVAWQ), by hosting an annual fundraising cricket day at the Port Douglas Community Sports Complex on Saturday, June 23.

The cricket day, which is in its sixth year, is a major fundraising initiative for the region and is expected to raise more than $15,000 for EVAWQ , which is the peak body in Queensland for sexual violence, women’s health and domestic and family violence.

Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu will officially open the day at 11am with a group photograph alongside all the cricketers.

Mantra Group’s Area Manager for Port Douglas Chris Northam said the day is a great community event and encourages locals, key suppliers, team members and families in the area to come along and enjoy a day of entertainment.

“More than 350 people turned up to our cricket day fundraiser last year so we are hoping more people come down to support again this year,” said Mr Northam.

MANTRA GROUP PROPERTIES IN TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND PITCH TOGETHER TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

“Everyone is welcome to attend and support the teams as they dust off their whites and hit the pitch for a game of cricket.

“There will be something for everyone there on the day including a visit from a helicopter courtesy of Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Helicopter Company filled with treats for the kids.

“We have countless prizes up for grabs on the day, including an air conditioning unit, a BBQ as well as our major prize of return flights to the Gold Coast courtesy of Jetstar and a family pass to all the theme parks which includes accommodation at a Mantra Group property.”

Port Douglas Crocs AFL President Chris Bradsworth and Local Cricket Club President Ben Vikionkorpi are key supporters in the event, with the two sports codes coming together to assist Mantra Group in their fundraising efforts.

“Ending violence in the community is an important foundation for us to support in our community, and it was only fitting that we allowed Mantra Group the use of the sports complex and catering facilities on the day,” said Mr Bradsworth.

“A pitch will be crafted especially for the team outside of the cricket season, and our staff and players will be in attendance on the day to support Mantra Group in their aim to reach $15,000,” said Mr Vikionkorpi.

In FY17, Mantra Group donated $100,000 towards ending violence against women in our communities through events such as the cricket day and various other employee fundraising initiatives.

For more information on corporate sponsorship packages or if you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please email Chris Northam or call 0448 195 980.

INTRODUCING PEPPERS SILO: LAUNCESTON’S ICONIC NEW HOTEL OFFICIALLY OPENS ITS DOORS

Launceston’s iconic new hotel Peppers Silo will open its doors to the public on Saturday, June 2 with an official opening celebration, of more than 1000 guests and dignitaries gathering to commemorate the landmark hotel opening on Friday, June 1.

Originally erected in 1960, the Kings Wharf grain silos were left unused for decades until two years ago when construction began to breathe new life into the structure, transforming the silo barrels into a state-of-the-art contemporary new hotel.

The redeveloped site is now a ten-level hotel featuring 108 guest rooms, including 52 inside the barrels of the former silos, a restaurant and bar called Grain of the Silos, undercover car parking, conference facilities for up to 500 people, and an integrated lobby and reception space.

Located in a prime position on the edge of the River Tamar and close to the beautiful Cataract Gorge, the once unused silo barrels have transformed into a $25-million luxury-by-design redevelopment which includes one and two bedroom apartments.

Amenities at Peppers Silo includes a fully equipped gym, relaxing day spa, child minding facilities, hairdressing salon, function centre, private dining rooms, restaurant and cocktail bar with views overlooking the water all the way to Cataract Gorge.

INTRODUCING PEPPERS SILO: LAUNCESTON’S ICONIC NEW HOTEL OFFICIALLY OPENS ITS DOORS

For all day in-room dining options, Grain of the Silos, is the property’s onsite restaurant and bar, which is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner and features a range of decadent meal options, focused truly on local Tasmanian produce and supporting local farmers and producers.

There are two driving forces heading up the kitchen, with Head Chef Peter Twitchett, and Food Director and TV personality Massimo Mele, who will oversee the menu in an advisory role. Both Peter and Massimo recently completed a food tour, meeting all of the local Producers they will be working with to source only the best ingredients for the venue. Tasmanian Wine Educator Curly Haslam-Coates has carefully curated the wine list, which features award-winning wines from regions across Tasmania and afar.

Mantra Group’s Executive Director of Operations Mark Hodge said the Group was proud to have officially opened Peppers Silo Hotel.

“We are very proud to officially open the doors of the iconic Peppers Silo Hotel today,” said Mr Hodge.

“This impressive property and restaurant will inject $10-million into the local Tasmanian economy each year and has created 50 full time jobs at the hotel.

“Situated on the beautiful Tamar River and in close proximity to Cataract Gorge, Peppers Silo gives hotel guests a new perspective over Launceston, with extensive views facing out to the snow-capped Mount Barrow during winter.

“This landmark hotel and its beautiful amenities have been carefully designed to appeal equally to Tasmania’s leisure visitors and the fast-growing business visitor and corporate market.

“Tasmanian tourism is currently experiencing record growth, and with this strong performance set to continue, the opening of Peppers Silo is the perfect addition to our existing portfolio in Launceston.”

Peppers Silo Hotel is the first hotel development to open in Launceston since Mantra Charles Hotel was developed in 2010.

Owner and Developer Errol Stewart said Launceston was in need of new tourism projects and has a shortage of hotel rooms in summer.

“I am proud of what we have delivered and I believe this building will continue to be iconic for Launceston for years to come,” said Mr Stewart.

Peppers Silo is located at 89-91 Lindsay Street, Launceston and will open to the public from Saturday, June 2.

Celebrity Chef Matt Golinski

Celebrity Chef Matt Golinski has joined the team at Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas to head up the kitchen at View Restaurant as the hotel’s new Food Ambassador and Advisory Executive Chef.

Adding a fresh approach to View Restaurant, Matt hopes to use more seasonal locally-sourced produce in his flavoursome new dishes planned for breakfast, lunch and dinner from April 3.

A Noosa-local himself, Matt said when he was offered the opportunity to head up View Restaurant’s kitchen at Peppers Noosa, he jumped at the chance.

“I have always loved both the brand Peppers and in particular Peppers Noosa,” said Matt.

“Each Peppers property captures the essence of the location it is in and takes advantage of their own geographical location to give guests an experience suited to that region but Peppers Noosa is by far my favourite.

“I love the place, the people, and the professionalism of everyone who works there and I think View Restaurant has great potential to be a fantastic showcase for fresh seasonal ingredients from local producers.

“My philosophy is to give our customers a genuinely local experience, using only the freshest ingredients sourced from local farmers and producers.

“To encourage the rest of the staff at View Restaurant to really embrace that philosophy, I want to ensure I can take them on the journey with me so I will be taking them to some of the local farms I love because once they experience it and understand where these ingredients are coming from, they will be able to convey those messages to our customers.”

Some of the new dishes Matt is looking to launch include are:

- Tin Can Bay Whiting, Endives and Grapes, Macadamia Picada, Sherry Caramel
- Bendele Farm Spatchcock, Pork and Fennel Sausage, White Beans, Grilled Cos, Salmoriglio
- Jersey Milk Ricotta Cannoli, Fresh Figs, Lemon Gelato and Cinnamon Honey

New menus will roll out in View Restaurant from April 3 and to celebrate, Matt will launch an introductory Local’s Lunch Special which includes two courses and a glass of wine for $25 – available seven days a week.

Peppers Noosa is located at 33A Viewland Drive, Noosa Heads, Qld and View Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Bookings are essential so book now to avoid missing out by calling (07) 5455 2209 or head to www.peppers.com.au/noosa
