BLIND VETERAN ROWS FROM CALIFORNIA TO ALA MOANA HOTEL BY MANTRA, HAWAII

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra welcomed former UK Royal Marines Mick Dawson and Steve Sparkes

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra welcomed former UK Royal Marines Mick Dawson and Steve Sparkes, the two-man crew of the Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour, on August 28 after they successfully completed the Great Pacific Race - a grueling, 2,400 mile race from Monterey in California to Hawaii.

Now safely on land following their treacherous 82-day expedition through rough seas from Hurricane Lane, both Mick and Steve have rejoined with their partners and are now recuperating with a stay at Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra.

Steve, who lost his vision following a diving incident in his twenties, becomes the first blind person to row across the Pacific Ocean, entering the Guinness World Records for this incredible feat.

Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra General Manager, Craig Smith, said the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra team are thrilled to partner with the Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour rowers and to be Steve and Mike’s land of Aloha home away from home.

“We’re so proud to welcome the rowers to our hotel and we’re doing our utmost to facilitate their recovery after such a brave and obstacle-filled journey to our shores,” said Mr Smith.

Their arrival comes as the Hawaiian Tourism Authority confirmed the State of Hawaii is open for business post-Hurricane Lane. All airports, resorts and hotels, activities, restaurants, retail operations, beaches and publicly accessible roadways are open, as well as most forest lands and state and county parks.

The Cockleshell Pacific Endeavour is the final team to complete the 2018 race, with two other crews already reaching the finish line and two withdrawing. For further information on the Great Pacific Race, visit www.greatpacificrace.com
